Backstory:
Got ill on the flight back from San Diego, a nice sore throat which quickly turned into a "my head's gonna esplode" sinus disaster. Actually took sick time for the first time since the appendix burst, staying home both Thursday and Friday. As of last night, I was still on the fence about the race. Normally I'd say 'fuck it' and just do it, but I wanted my first 'only a' marathon to be good (ie, see how close to BQ I could run). Decided this morning at 0-dark thirty to run the race (made easier since the GF also ran the race). Get there (quick 25 minutes), do the usual drink-n-piss routine for 45 minutes then the start. I was planning on running with the 3:20 pacers before I got sick. Figured the 3:30 pacers would get me through after being unable to do anything for four days. When the 3:40 pacers passed my about 8 miles in I knew it wasn't going to be a pleasant day. My HR was high (upper 160's, when I normally run 8:00/mile at 147-153), RPE was high (felt like I was sprinting), and my legs felt weak. End result: 3:49:xy (final results aren't up yet). Lesson learned: don't attempt to phone-in a marathon after being sick for four days. I'm off to replenish the 3000+ kcal I just burned off...
