"blasts", "slams", "snubs"

The best way to devalue the meaning of those words is to use them in every newspaper and news site headline where someone doesn't agree (however mildly or predictably) with someone else or choses one alternative over another. So, here is my day in such hyperbole:

Merekat blasts odd socks!
Merekat slams lack of breakfast travesty!
Merekat snubs 07:58 train!

Also known as, got up, slightly peeved at not being able to find matching socks, opened fridge and remembered I forgot to buy yoghurt and got a bit delayed so got a slightly later train than usual.

One of the ignominities of living with my parents, by ambrosen (2.00 / 0) #1 Thu Feb 16, 2006 at 07:29:02 AM EST
of which there are surprisingly few, except for the overarching general desire to have somewhere of my own, is the fact that my washing is occasionally hung out or put away by my Mum if she gets to it first. She also occasionally washes my towel or bedsheets as well, normally 2 days after I have.

Anyway, she managed to pair up all my socks for me with this batch of washing, which made getting up this morning much nicer.

Snubs by gazbo (4.00 / 1) #2 Thu Feb 16, 2006 at 07:33:09 AM EST
At the Grammys, Kelly Clarkson didn't thank American Idol when she won.  Hence, according to the papers she snubbed them.  Note the use of an active verb to describe an inactivity (as hinted at by your train example).

Of course, the fact that she won American Idol 3 years ago, has since completely left their stable, and indeed the fact that the song/album she won for was entirely unrelated to any of the American Idol team is irrelevant: she didn't thank them, ergo they were snubbed.

To snub:

I snub
You snub
He/she/it snubs
For ice-cream.

Can I recommend you plug sorbets and granitas along with your ice creams?

There is a large and growing movement for equality among frozen deserts. The baked alaska contingent are of course, a little unsure where they stand. The deep fried ice cream people talk too slowly to have finished the first word of their statement yet, so I'm unsure of their feelings.

snubs2 by Merekat (2.00 / 0) #12 Thu Feb 16, 2006 at 10:05:06 AM EST
The recent irritating headline where I saw it was 'U2 snubbed at Brits'. Otherwise known as 'other people won stuff'.

U2 being snubbed at Brits would have been not being invited or not being let in or something.

Lothian Water Charges Rocket!
Dr Who Played God!

Dr Who Played God!

Which episode was that?

Or was it something like Tom Bakers role in the Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) remake?

Yeah. by ambrosen (2.00 / 0) #8 Thu Feb 16, 2006 at 07:53:32 AM EST
Apparently Harold Shipman's fantasies over life and death count as playing God.

Also "Misery" by nebbish (4.00 / 2) #6 Thu Feb 16, 2006 at 07:42:56 AM EST
"Misery line" is the most common but it seems to be applied to most transport delays.

Actually quite funny though if you imagine them all crammed into the a train carriage crying and wailing.

I swear, Prescott could pound David Cameron to a smug pulp, and nobody would even bother to read past the headline.

But I didn't want to appear to snub you, so I thought I'd say it anyway.
