And work blah blah blah.

Shameless pandering-for-pageviews all-WIPO poll: What's your favourite liquor?

So work has revved up again and I'm on a couple of new things to keep my days busy.

Our head count is increasing, slowly. We're still small enough to only hire people who are a) reasonably sane, and b) pretty well skilled, so things are still pretty cool here.

We've now had to rearrange our original "plop your self down wherever you feel like because we have so much space" layout to something that makes more optimal use of what space we have.

It's also actually two companies in one, kinda. There are the video guys and us web guys. It's possible we'll have to split up at some point, but that would be unfortunate as we sometimes work together on the same projects, since we deal with some of the same agencies, and all get along pretty well.

A couple of Parkdale scenes - Ossington Ave and The Cadillac Lounge on Queen St. Drawn with the quill and brush-pen.

So tonight, barring unforseen circumstances, I'll be checking out the Dr Sketchy's burlesque dancer life drawing night at the Cameron House. Hope it's as interesting as it sounds on paper. Since it's at a bar, I might try a shot of whiskey or two, to "loosen up". What's your favourite liquor?

Unmanly? How about faux Bailey's? by georgeha (4.00 / 1) #4 Mon Sep 10, 2007 at 02:57:05 PM EST
About the only liquor I drink is more of a liqueur, the generic equivalent of Bailey's (unless I make it myself with generic Irish whiskey).

Scotch by Gedvondur (4.00 / 3) #5 Mon Sep 10, 2007 at 03:25:53 PM EST
Single malt, Speysides, generally.  The one I keep in the house is The Glenlivet 12.  I occasionally get The Balvenie 10 or Glenfiddich 12 if the mood strikes me.

I also have a bottle of The Macallan Cask Strength at 116 proof in the cupboard, but it's a real ass-kicker to drink.

Jameson 12 year old. by toxicfur (4.00 / 3) #6 Mon Sep 10, 2007 at 03:56:02 PM EST
When I'm not feeling cheap, and then just regular Jameson. Tasty, tasty stuff, and I don't feel the need to mix it with anything, so it's easy, too. I love Stoli gimlets and martinis, and mojitos, and Irish coffees, but I'm usually too lazy to mix anything.

Well, that's not what the song says, but you are most likely correct.

covers that song? I didn't know.

I don't have a fave. by Christopher Robin was Murdered (4.00 / 1) #10 Mon Sep 10, 2007 at 05:42:38 PM EST
The fun of drinking is in the experimentation, in finding new and interesting drinks.

For me, drinking some whisky with a history older than the Roman Catholic Church is like attending a party at some stuffy Boston Brahmin's home. You can't put your feet up and their idea of adventure is making opaque slanders of the other Brahmin families. "Well, if you're interested in that sort of revival Normandy architecture," he said with a smirk. "I'm certain the Endicotts would happily extend an invitation to their Dedham estate."

Where's the fun in that?

But tell me that some dude is cranking out a "rum" distilled from batches of sorghum molasses bought from the Finger Mennonites, and I'm in.

i like the trick where you draw less bricks to lighten up a wall.  i also like the way you've developed your own stylised way of doing urban objects like hydrants, bicycles, etc. you should make a spacejack clipart gallery :-p

Yeah, what I've found with ink by spacejack (2.00 / 0) #12 Mon Sep 10, 2007 at 06:23:30 PM EST
is that it's so black that even a single line can noticeably bring the lightness of a whole area down. So while I'm experimenting with more detail by using a pen instead of just a brush, even with a pen the darkening effect of lines can easily be underestimated.

In summer you can't beat a G&T. In winter I'll drink just about any whisk(e)y excluding only the cheap blends.
Of course there's always Pimms...

Ok, if I might make a criticism. by komet (4.00 / 1) #17 Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 07:07:33 AM EST
I don't like the way that in the second picture, you replicated the way an upwards-pointing camera makes all the vertical lines go to hell. Among the crowd of dicks that I hang out with, it is considered poor photography; and it is easier to correct in a drawing.

I suspect you did it on purpose to emphasise a low standpoint, but in photography we prefer to put looming stuff in the foreground (such as the hydrant in this picture) to achieve the same effect.

It's an interesting point by spacejack (4.00 / 1) #19 Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 01:08:20 PM EST
I've never quite understood the problem with that, unless the converging lines are drawing your eye off the top of the picture.

I did it - not just in this one, but others - usually to cram more into the scene. One of the things I find interesting about looking around in the city is how much stuff there is.

It may not be very successful in this drawing, but I was most interested in getting the shape of the top edge of the building in the frame, without moving so far back that the figure would be tiny.

What bugs me most about it is that the tilt of the horizon is unecessary and annoying to my eye, and the tilt of the lamp posts is overdone. I thought it would work better when I sketched it out, but it probably would've been better to straghten things out a bit more.

Toss up between Knappogue Castle single malt whiskey or a dry martini with cheap vodka and an extra olive.
